A Revolução de Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin e a Termodinâmica das Atmosferas Estelares

Resumo

A tese de doutorado de Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin (1925) redefiniu a composição química do universo, consolidando a astrofísica moderna. Este estudo reconstrói os fundamentos termodinâmicos e estatísticos que permitiram identificar hidrogênio e hélio como elementos estelares dominantes, derrubando a suposição de que as estrelas espelhavam a crosta terrestre. Aplicando as equações de Boltzmann e Saha a dados espectroscópicos de Harvard, demonstra-se que a intensidade das linhas depende da temperatura e de estados quânticos acessíveis, não da concentração bruta. O artigo contextualiza a resistência acadêmica enfrentada por Payne, a validação posterior por Henry Norris Russell e a significância historiográfica do episódio. Integrando física, história e filosofia, posiciona-se a trajetória de Payne como ferramenta didática para ilustrar como o rigor matemático e a persistência analítica superam consensos arraigados e barreiras institucionais.
