Fatphobia and health care: a study on weight stigma in a family health unit in the city of Santos

The role that society plays in the health care of people with obesity has been considered ineffective. This research was carried out with health professionals from a Family Health Unit and aimed to understand how the internalization of weight bias influences clinical practice. The Implicit Association Test and two focus groups were used as instruments. The qualiquantitative approach was used in the method of the research. Regarding the Implicit Association Test, from the total of 8 participants, we had 3 results indicating strong automatic preference for thin people compared to fat people, 2 results indicating moderate automatic preference for thin people compared to fat people, 1 result indicating slight automatic preference for thin people compared to fat people and 2 results with little or no preference for thin people compared to fat people. From the content analysis, two main categories emerged: body dissatisfaction and fatphobia in health care. The discussion included the actions that health professionals have in relation to patients with obesity, and the aesthetic pressure aimed at the female audience.
