Factors related to depression in hospitalized elderly people: an integrative review

Objective: To analyze the scientific evidence on factors related to depression in hospitalized elderly people. Method: This is an Integrative Review, in which the searches took place in three databases, Bireme, PubMed and Scopus, using the established inclusion and exclusion criteria and the PICo strategy. Result: 13 studies were included in the synthesis of this review. The studies showed that the factors associated with depression in hospitalized elderly people were frailty, clinical comorbidity, low social support and substance abuse. The development of depression during hospitalization was also associated with a greater number of readmissions and clinical problems associated with other comorbidities. Conclusion: Several factors can affect the elderly population and make them susceptible to depression. In a hospitalization context, there is greater vulnerability to the predominance of these factors, therefore, the importance of establishing efficient strategies for identifying and preventing depression in the elderly is highlighted, in addition to providing more humanized care that meets the biopsychosocial needs of the elderly people.
