Objective: to know the prevalence of dental caries and potential risk factors associated with the disease in preschoolers in Salvador, Bahia. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study carried out in Municipal Early Childhood Education Centers and Basic Health Units in preschool children, in 2018, through a survey carried out by the Faculty of Dentistry of the Federal University of Bahia in partnership with the Municipal Health and Education Departments. The researchers examined 1,591 thousand children in twelve districts of the Salvador municipality. Data were analyzed descriptively and exploratory in search of associations. Results: The dmf-t found was 1.43 and the percentage of children with caries experience was 36.5%. Among the socioeconomic factors associated with the presence of caries in preschoolers, the mothers´ education stood out (p<0,05). Childhood caries were more frequent in children over 36 months of age and it were directly related to the cariogenic diet, visible biofilm and active white spots (p<0,05). Conclusion: Carie is a still very common disease in children of Salvador-BA, associated with socioeconomic and behavioral factors. Stimulation and improvement of educational and preventive interventions are necessary with the aim of reducing the prevalence of the disease, especially among mothers with less education.
