The role of primary care nurses in promoting positive parenting

Objective: To describe the actions that nurses working in Primary Care carry out to promote positive parenting in the care of families with children aged 0 to 3 years. Method: A descriptive, exploratory study with a qualitative approach, carried out in the city of Promissão, São Paulo, Brazil. Nine nurses working in Primary Care health units participated. To collect the data, individual semi-structured interviews were conducted from July to August 2021, and the thematic content analysis technique was used. Results: The following categories of actions carried out by Primary Care nurses emerged from the discourses: actions to build the parental role; and strategies used to increase access to families. Conclusion: It was possible to identify that Primary Care nurses carry out actions to promote positive parenting, but their work still needs to be expanded in this care context so that the promotion of positive parenting is effectively implemented. The need to invest in continuing education and the improvement of professionals in this area was confirmed.
