Abstract

The article aims to analyze the quality of menstrual hygiene management among users of Family Health Units in the city of Caruaru, PE. This is a cross-sectional, descriptive, and quantitative study. The Adapted Scale for Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management (EAGSHM), adjusted to the Brazilian context, was applied to a sample of 314 participants between 2023 and 2024. The profile of the interviewed users of Family Health Units in Caruaru showed higher percentages of menstrual hygiene adequacy among those aged 50 to 59 years (33.3%), those of white ethnicity (26.4%), those with an educational level up to elementary school (27.2%) and those with an income higher than two minimum wages (33.3%), although without statistically significant diferences (p>0.05). The study also highlighted the widespread use of disposable pads among participants (98.73%) and the low percentage of handwashing before changing pads (38.85%). Finally, the high prevalence of semi-adequate and inadequate menstrual hygiene management (77.7%) observed among users of the Family Health Units in Caruaru-PE highlights the need for interventions focused on education, infrastructure improvement, and access to adequate resources, especially for the most vulnerable groups.
