Social vulnerabilities related to infection and mortality by COVI D-19: a systematic review

Aim: To analyze the correlation between social vulnerability and coronavirus morbimortality. Methods: The results were obtained through searches on Pubmed, VHL and SciELO databases; using the following terms and their synonyms identified in Decs and MeSH: coronavirus infections, vulnerable populations, social change, and risk groups. Only original studies published in English, Spanish, or Portuguese were eligible. Results: From 6,420 publications identified, 19 were selected. The conclusion indicates that the social vulnerability factors most related to COVID-19 infection and/or mortality were: black population, precarious socioeconomic and sanitary conditions, unemployment, housing and public transport agglomerations, indigenous population, lack of proficiency in the predominant language and rural populations. There were no major disparities comparing high-income and low-income countries. As for the biological factors associated with greater severity of the disease, no studies with low-income countries were identified. Conclusion: The social vulnerabilities identified accentuate health inequities and increase the risk of infection and/or mortality due to COVID-19. It is necessary to prioritize these populations when one planning public health policies, as well as promoting access to COVID-19 prevention and control actions appropriate to their needs.
