The mental health of health workers needs to be re-discussed as an occupational health issue to be promoted and preserved, especially in crisis situations, such as the one currently experienced in the COVID-19 pandemic. The study sought to reflect on the repercussions and strategies on the mental suffering experienced by health workers in coping with COVID-19. To this end, a reflection was built on the influence of national policy and the current pandemic on the mental health of workers. It is suggested that strategies for the promotion and preservation of the mental health of workers who face COVID-19 must consider three major critical nodes: government support, with the guarantee of occupational health and safety laws, as well as evidence-based planning; organizational support, with a focus on continuing education, guarantee of personal protective equipment and psychosocial support; social support, which includes family, community and worker support. Thus, the mental health of health workers is influenced by their work activities in coping with COVID-19, especially in an environment of precarious work, constituting a challenge to be overcome in the health system with the implantation support strategies.
