Trend in epidemiological and operational indicators of leprosy in children under 15 years of age in the Northeast region of Brazil, 2013 - 2022

Objective: Analyze the trend of epidemiological and operational indicators of leprosy in the Northeast region of Brazil from 2013 to 2022. Method: Time series study. Operational and leprosy morbidity indicators were calculated based on data from the Notifiable Diseases Information System. Prais-Winsten regression was used. Results: Leprosy detection rates in children under 15 years of age (VPA= -11.3; 95% CI -15.8; -6.5) and cure rate (VPA= -5.0; 95% CI -9.7; -0.0) showed a decreasing trend. The proportion of grade 2 physical disability (GIF2) (VPA= 6.8 95% CI -0.3; 14.5) and of contacts examined (VPA= -0.1; 95% CI -2.3; 2.2) showed stationary trend. Conclusion: Despite the trend of decreasing cases in the population under 15 years of age, there is a need to pay attention to the endemicity parameter, which demonstrates difficulties in tracking the epidemiological chain of transmission, persistent sources of transmission and delays in diagnosis and treatment of the disease. The persistence of cases with GIF2 reveals the need to increase contact tracing and treatment to achieve a cure.
