Abstract

The genus Mazama is widely distributed along South America. In Brazil, it is represented by five species. There are few studies on this species’ biology because of its withdrawn behavior. This fact turns it difficult to implement traditional methods of fauna research. The study of popular knowledge can help in many ways in a fauna investigation, and it is very important in a conservation plan. In this work, we interviewed the people of five villages around the Ibitipoca State Park, MG, Brazil, to evaluate the popular knowledge about the genus Mazama in this region. Our data show significant differences among age, sex, time of living and size of the village, concerning the sightings of Mazama species. We also concluded that the people of this region are probably unable to identify the species of this genus.
