Abstract

This study aims to plot the occurrence and investigate the
diet of the pufferfish Sphoeroides testudineus on the west margin of the Baía de Todos os Santos (BTS). Fish were
collected bimonthly by beach seine, between July 2003 and June 2006, in five localities. The importance of each food item
was given by the Alimentary Index, which combines the frequency of occurrence and volumetric methods. Among the six
species of pufferfish registered, S. testudineus was the dominant one and the only species resident in the area. In the BTS,
S. testudineus showed a carnivorous habit, feeding mainly on crustaceans and mollusks.
