UM ESTUDO SOBRE AS DINÂMICAS SOCIAIS E RELIGIOSAS NA FAVELA DOS ALAGADOS, SALVADOR (1960-1980)

Resumo

Resumo: O presente artigo tem por objetivo analisar a formação da “favela” dos Alagados em Salvador entre as décadas de 1960-1980. Exploramos como fatores políticos, sociais, religiosos e urbanos contribuíram para a constituição dessa região peculiar, marcada pelas palafitas sobre as águas da maré. Examinamos o papel de segmentos da Igreja Católica no desenvolvimento da região por meio das ações sociais. Observamos que fiéis e lideranças notáveis, como a Irmã Dulce dos Pobres, Madre Teresa de Calcutá e o Papa João Paulo II, marcaram uma importante presença do Catolicismo, cuja ações assistenciais modificaram o tecido social dos Alagados, bem como, trouxeram visibilidade à comunidade marginalizada pela inação estatal. Utilizando fontes documentais e iconográficas, buscamos não apenas compreender a trajetória dessas palafitas, mas também destacar a resiliência e as dinâmicas sociais moldadas pela presença da Igreja Católica.

Abstract: The objective of this article is to examine the genesis of the Alagados "favela" in Salvador between the 1960s and 1980s. This article examines the ways in which a range of political, social, religious, and urban factors contributed to the formation of this distinctive region, which is characterised by its construction on stilts over tidal waters. The role of segments of the Catholic Church in the development of the region through social action was also examined. It is evident that prominent figures within the Catholic Church, such as Sister Dulce of the Poor, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, and Pope John Paul II, played a significant role in shaping the social and welfare landscape of Alagados. Their actions not only transformed the social fabric of the community but also brought visibility to those who were previously marginalized by the lack of state intervention. By utilizing documentary and iconographic sources, our objective is twofold: firstly, to comprehend the trajectory of these palafitas, and secondly, to elucidate the resilience and social dynamics that have been shaped by the Catholic Church's presence.
