A IMPORTÂNCIA DA MEDICINA PARA O ESTUDO DAS PAIXÕES NA DOUTRINA DE DESCARTES

The aim of this article is to show that the body, as much as the soul, is essential for understanding Cartesian psychology, and in this sense, we must refer to medicine, since it is the field of study that deals with the anatomical study of the body and its functions. This is how, in our view, the specificity of Cartesian theory of passions will consist: fostering a psychology grounded in physiology, without denying emotions a subjective experience. Thus, Descartes contributes to the development of a psychology that is not purely metaphysical nor entirely empirical, but rather a science of the soul that relies on the medicine of the body.
