Starting from the author's own intellectual journey, the article aims to explore the concept of privation, showing how it plays a central role in Blaise Pascal's thought and is behind the theological notion of the Fall, a key point for the French thinker. The article then explores the notions of evil and privation in Spinoza, particularly on the basis of his correspondence with Blyenbergh. The article shows that Spinoza radicalizes Augustine's and Descartes' solution to the same problem, refusing to give any kind of ontological consistency to privation. Just like the notion of evil, privation itself can only be thought of as the result of a merely imaginative comparison, with no bearing on reality. In this way, even without having this in mind, Spinoza presents a powerful critique of the core of Pascalian thought.
