HIBRIDAÇÃO, DISTÂNCIA RESSIGNIFICADORA E LUGAR DE FALA/MÚSICA

Abstract

This paper reflects on the formation of a space of musical creation – the Movimento de Composição na Bahia (Composition Movement in Bahia), which emerged in 1954 at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) – insofar as it functions as an interstitial (in-between) phenomenon. From this positionality, hybridization and a resignifying distance emerge as principal forces, and the movement thus intertwines with broader sectors of Bahian society that are similarly oriented. Aesthetic questions are examined from the vantage point of processes of musical creation, revealing an intrinsic link between composition and culture with tangible consequences for theories of composition. Finally, drawing on the notion of compositionality, the paper advances the possibility of translating the concept of lugar de fala (roughly: positionality or standpoint) into the field of music, indexing composition as woven from world-making, criticality, and reciprocity, and thereby producing a cartography of how centrality is ascribed to the outcomes of the compositional process.
