THE WORLD OF THE TEXT IN PAUL RICOEUR
FROM THE HISTORY OF HERMENEUTICS TO SELF-UNDERSTANDING

The aim of this article is to reconstruct the trajectory of Paul Ricoeur’s philosophical hermeneutics on the basis of the notion of the world of the text, showing how it emerges from a critical dialogue with the modern and contemporary hermeneutical tradition, especially in Schleiermacher, Dilthey, Heidegger, and Gadamer. It is argued that Ricoeur’s proposal consists in a reconfiguration of hermeneutics that preserves the ontological gain inaugurated by Heidegger and Gadamer, without relinquishing textual mediation and a return to epistemology. The positive notion of distanciation, central to this trajectory, makes it possible to understand the text both as a projection of a world and as a privileged mediation of self-understanding. Finally, it is maintained that the world of the text constitutes the true center of gravity of Ricoeurian hermeneutics, shifting interpretation away from the pole of the author’s intention and the reader’s immediate subjectivity toward the horizon of meaning opened by the work.
