O LIBERALISMO EM JOHN MILL E JOHN RAWLS

Résumé

O objetivo do presente artigo é comparar as doutrinas liberais de John Mill e John Rawls. O trabalho é divido em três momentos: (i) exposição e análise do ideário liberal milliano; (ii) exposição e análise do ideário liberal rawlsiano e (iii) comparação das concepções de ambos e avaliação de diferenças e das vantagens comparativas entre os autores. Ambos reafirmam o dever do Estado e da sociedade de proteger e assegurar as liberdades individuais básicas. Todavia, eles partilham a visão que o binômio liberdade e igualdade pode ser equacionado, entendendo-se a igualdade por justiça social. Mill e Rawls compreendem que o poder estatal deve garantir condições simétricas de oportunidade para os cidadãos e proteção social aos menos favorecidos. Porém, ao contrário do marxismo, eles não admitem o sacrifício da distribuição igual das liberdades básicas para possíveis ganhos socioeconômicos.
