Abstract

The aim of the paper is to read Foucault as a political philosopher who engaged directly, and in an innovative way, with the canon of political philosophy. The focus is on Foucault’s reading of Machiavelli’s The Prince in Security, Territory, Population lectures. Foucault’s provocative aim there is to turn the received interpretation of Machiavelli on its head. When we read Machiavelli through the conceptual framework of governmentality, we are forced to question the commonly accepted view of him as the founder of modern political philosophy. Instead, Foucault shows that Machiavelli belongs firmly to the pre-modern era. It is precisely in contrast to Machiavelli’s thought that some of the most distinctive features of modern political thought can be brought into relief. The paper concludes by assessing Foucault’s approach to the history of philosophy as a distinct form of contextualism.
