Abstract

Abstract: In this paper I analyze Marcos Jorge's commentary On Interpretation, I, 9 and show that, in order to resolve the contradictions raised there by Aristotle's, he adopts the Scotistic definition of contingency. On the basis of this definition, and when analyzing the question "Whether contingency exists", this Jesuit intends to defend a compatibilist position on the relationship between the existence of divine foreknowledge and the contingency of free agents. In order to do so, he draws on Thomas' arguments in the Summa of Theology I, q. 14, a.3. However, because of the definition of contingency he has adopted, in his explanation it becomes clear that Thomas’ arguments are unsuitable for defending compatibilism. This conclusion suggests that, at the time, the need to find new conceptual tools to explain how God knows contingency was becoming imperative.

Keywords: contingent futures; divine foreknowledge; human freedom; divine science of contingency.
