In this paper, I will examine Descartes’s position on the number of corporeal substances and, as consequence, on ontological statute of bodies. By examining these issues, I will demonstrate that they are inserted in an existing debate in the literature about Descartes that separates pluralists and monists. Given this debate, I will first present the textual basis of the pluralist interpretation, as well as its main arguments. I will then argue that if we take into account Descartes’s metaphysical theses on substance, as well as some of the theses on his physics, the thesis of a pluralism of corporeal substances in nature faces more difficulties than the monist thesis. I will then defend the monist interpretation as solution and, lastly, examine a problem that might arise from this interpretation, but that I believe can be solved.
