Abstract

The duckweeds are a monophyletic group in Araceae, their main characteristic is the morphological reduction of the vegetative body. Representatives of this group take up large areas in the semi-arid lakes. The sampling of these populations is non-parametric. The objective of this paper is to test the significance of the individual number variation among samples of Lemnoideae populations, comparing the results of non-parametric tests and evaluating the sampling method. A lake with significant population of Lemnoideae was selected, that was collected making use of a measurable method. Lemna aequinoctialis Welwisch, L. valdiviana Phil., Wolffia brasiliensis Weddell, and Wolffiella welwitschii (Hegelm.) Monod were the species found. The average density was 178.6 x 105 to 719.4 x 105 individuals/m2. The L. aequinoctialis populations have heterogeneous distribution, while those of L. valdiviana, Wolffia brasiliensis and Wolffiella welwitschii are homogeneous. This suggests that a larger number of samples is necessary to have a good description of L. valdiviana populations, while a not so large sampling of Wolffia brasiliensis and Wolffiella welwitschii populations allow good inference on real numbers. The method used was sensitive enough to show the population heterogeneity.
