This work aims to study the medicinal plants used against stomach ulcer and gastritis in the village of Vila Capim, located in the municipality of Arapiraca-AL, in an attempt to understand the relationship between community and plants. From November of 2004 to February of 2005, research was conducted in the field with some informants, using non-participant observation and semi structured interviews. They determined that 26 plants, belonging to 16 families, are used to combat different diseases. They cultivated almost all of the plants in their backyards. Twenty-one species of plants are used against ulcers and gastritis, such as Solanum cf. paniculatum (Solanaceae) and Brassica oleraceae (Brassicaceae). A comparison was made between information obtained from local informants and that obtained from the literature. Informants verified that popular medicine is strongly related to local culture, and greatly impacts health practices and public politics.
