Abstract

There are many interesting particularities regarding the life of insects, its use in medicine and appearance in legends and superstitions of the people. This article deals with the insects of the subclass Pterygogenea (12 orders). The most common insects in legends and superstitions are grasshoppers, crickets, cockroaches and praying mantis. Grasshoppers, crickets and cockroaches are used as food by Indians and poor people. Several insects are used in folk medicine (entomotherapy) for the treatment of various illnesses such as stuttering, urine retention, lithiasis, otitis, asthma, jaundice, etc.
