Abstract

The destruction of historical monuments of great artistic, cultural and economic value is among the most serious types of damage caused by insects. This research aimed at investigating the role of insects in the destruction of churches of historical value according to the “Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional”. We aimed at identifying insects mainly responsible for damages and the methods for prevention and control by means of questionnaires, visits, document surveys and literature review. We observed that insects, especially termites and borers, are the main responsible for damages, according to 90% of the interviewees. We also noticed that the most frequently used method for prevention and control are based on homemade poison mixtures.
