Extremófilos: enzimas e aplicações industriais

Os extremófilos são microrganismos que estão adaptados a viver em altas temperaturas como em fontes termais, baixas temperaturas como as regiões polares, altas concentrações de sais, sob pH ácidos e alcalinos e ainda sob altas pressões como mares profundos. As enzimas mesofílicas têm como restrição de utilização as condições drásticas das reações requeridas em processos industriais, por causa da falta da estabilidade da enzima. A descoberta de microorganismos extremófilos e de suas enzimas teve um impacto grande no campo da biotecnologia. Estes microorganismos produzem os biocatalisadores que atuam sob as circunstâncias restritas aos mesofílicos, permitindo o desenvolvimento de processos industriais adicionais.
