Abstract

Recent Applied Linguistics and Sociolinguistics scholarship has accommodated new theoretical and methodological perspectives as an attempt to account for the complex relationship between globalization, identity and mobility. One of the main interests of this body of research has focused on the investigation of how multilingual speakers employ a wide range of semiotic resources to communicate. Such an attempt has paved the way for not only the inclusion of a new vocabulary in contemporary applied research, but also for a return to old debates through different lenses. So, in this text, I rely on the connectedness of the concepts of translanguaging and the Bakhtinian notion of chronotope as an alternative way to better understand the spacetime configurations that underlie multilinguals’ identities. In order to do so, I draw on netnographic data to look at Facebook interactions of a multilingual speaker. Therefore, I aim to provide a framework for the analysis of the dynamic relationship between time, space and translingual practices and its impact on the co-construction of online identity positionings.
