Abstract

This article aims to investigate the construction of meaning of the concept of NATION in the 187 presidential speeches given by Jair Bolsonaro during his first year in office, based on the corpus addressed by the first author in his master's thesis entitled Nation and Politics: an analysis of the presidential speeches of Jair Bolsonaro's first year in office in light of Conceptual Metaphor Theory. For this undertaking, we draw on the postulates of Conceptual Metaphor Theory (LAKOFF; JONHSON, 1980; LAKOFF, 2002), especially the Critical Approach to Metaphor (CHARTERIS-BLACK, 2004; MUSOLFF, 2004, 2016; GOATLY, 2007) and Frame Semantics (FILLMORE, 1976, 1982; DUQUE, 2015). The methodology adopted is qualitative and quantitative in nature, using AntConc software to quantify the occurrences of lexical items licensed by conceptual metaphors related to NATION and then analyzing the intentions of the subject of the discourse through interactional frames and the moral models proposed by Lakoff (2002). The results indicate that the subject of the discourse, by activating the frames MILITARY_DISCOURSE and CHRISTIAN_DISCOURSE, perspectives the meaning of the concept NATION, constructed from conceptual metaphors – in order of highest occurrence in the corpus – NATION IS FAMILY, NATION IS CONSTRUCTION, NATION IS PERSON, NATION IS BODY, and NATION IS PRISONER, motivated, in turn, by the moral model of the STRICT FATHER.
