Abstract

This article intends to expose the lack of representation of real women in the statues found in the Historic Center of Manaus, with the intention of covering three themes: saint, allegory and goddess. The work has three methodological steps: expose the living woman of the 20th century, as it exemplifies a great movement to honor the great deeds of men, seeking to investigate through the body and space where these women were, for this we will turn to Scott (2013 ), Sant'anna (2013) and Perrot (2003; 2007); then we will explore female representations in statues throughout the history of art, paying attention to five periods of art: Classicism, Middle Ages, Renaissance, Mannerism and Baroque, using as main theoretical resources Choay (2011) and Riegl (2014) to address the definition of monument, and Bruneau; Torelli; Altet (2006), along with Duby; Altet; Suduiraut (2006) for choosing sculptures from each artistic era; and finally, explore how the male figure occupies the space in the form of stature within the Historic Center of Manaus, which will serve as a comparison for the occupation of women in that same space and in that same artistic expression, taking into account the aforementioned themes, using of Birth (2013). Trying to answer about the female condition: does the stone body have more space than the flesh body?
