Crise do Bildungsroman no século XX: O jovem Törless e Retrato de um artista quando jovem

Abstract

The work proposes a discussion based on Franco Moretti's argument (2020) that the symbolic form of the Bildungsroman presents a crisis in the 20th century and produces late and atrophied formation novels. The objective is to make an analysis of the novels The Young Törless, by Robert Musil and Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man, by James Joyce, pointing out how the heroes suffer a compression that prevents exemplary development and fail to materialize a consonance that establishes the formation of its protagonists. The conclusion without harmony with the social group is related to the traumas of youth, the conflicting historical context of the 20th century, the fragmentation of the modern subject and the coercive forces of the educational institutions where they are hospitalized.
