Gênero sob opressão em Sombras de reis barbudos, de José J. Veiga

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to investigate the representation of some of the characters’ gender identities from the novel Sombras de reis barbudos, by José J. Veiga, and how these identities relate to the dynamics of power in the oppressive atmosphere that permeates the narrative. Initially, considerations about unusual elements of the author’s prose are presented with the studies of Dantas (2003) and Turchi (2005), alongside with other characteristics and possible readings of Veiga’s work with the studies of Nepomuceno (2007) and Amâncio (2019). The reflections of Adorno (2003) and Ginzburg (2012) about the position of the narrator, the theoretical support of Connell (2015, 2017), Grossi (2004) and Oliveira (2004) about gender, and the considerations of Gomes (2017), and others, about the work of Veiga are used when presenting the analysis of the novel. We observe that there is a reinforcement of conservative gender norms under the oppressive atmosphere presented in the novel, thus we can indicate and analyze the interrelations between the dynamics of power and gender.
