The first novel of the Senegalese writer Mariama Bâ, Une si longue lettre (1979), was awarded the Noma Prize (1980) at the Frankfurt International Book Fair. One of the criteria for the award was the lyrical nature of her composition. The aim of this article is to investigate the characteristics that give her story this lyricism, by classifying it as poetic prose. In order to do this, we will analyze concision, the presentification of the narration, figures of speech, as well as repetition, one of the traits of African orality present in the work. To carry out this analysis, we will draw mainly on the considerations of Amada Sow Dièye (1991).
