Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the differences and similarities between the doctrines of John Stuart Mill and John Rawls regarding the relationship between good and justice. In the first part of the article, the reader is introduced to the theme of the work. In the second part, the ideas of good and justice in Mill's thought. In the third part, the ideas of good and justice in Rawls and in the fourth, the identification of the similarities and differences between the doctrines. The final considerations provide a brief assessment and present the conclusions on the similarities between the theories and the authors' affiliation with moderate perfectionism. In both doctrines, consequentialist elements are evoked in the idea of a healthy development of human capacities. Since I classify the authors as moderate perfectionists, it is natural to question whether this would imply some kind of paternalism. I believe it does not, since, as we can see from the moderate perfectionism of both, the state apparatus must, through fair institutions, promote adequate conditions for the development of human capacities. However, the role of the State is limited to promoting, encouraging and encouraging individuals to strive for self-development, but it is forbidden for it to impose any way of life through legislation.
