Historical novels, hybrid narratives that amalgamate historical and fictional contents, present us with the possibility of revisiting the past and giving new meaning to problems such as the unilaterality of the records of traditional European hegemonic historiography about the colonization of the American continent. In this context, we present, in this article, the analysis of the novel Anacaona y las tormentas (1994), by Luis Dario Bernal Pinilla, a historical novel with a critical bias that fictionalizes the image of the Taíno chief Anacaona, a native of Guanahaní/“La Española ” who was murdered and had her community decimated by Spanish colonizers at the end of the 15th century. Although the figure of this leader has been, for the most part, excluded from official historiographical records, her image gains space in the literary universe. To analyze the work presented, we rely on theorists such as Dussel (1994), Martínez Miguélez (1994), Castro-Gómez (2007), Genette (2007), Vallejo (2015), and Fleck (2017). We classify the literary work as a contemporary historical novel of mediation, which presents a decolonial bias and corroborates the process of decolonization of the Latin American imaginary.
