Abstract

Abstract: This work aims to identify and classify the negation mechanisms present in Ndau texts, based on the assumption that negation is the operation that inverts the truth value of a proposition. The study adopts bibliographic research as its method which consists of gathering, selecting, analyzing, and organizing information on a specific topic with the aim of constructing a theoretical framework for the investigation. The analytical corpus consists of twenty Ndau texts distributed into five groups: short stories, proverbs, riddles, songs and narrative texts from 10 th and 20 th grade elementary school textbooks. These texts were redistributed into oral and written categories, and each received a coding to facilitate their organization and analysis. Ndau is a Mozabican language with approximately 840.946 speakers, predominantly in the provinces of Manica, Sofala, Tete, Inhambane, and Maputo City. Guthrie´s classification (1967-1971) places Ndau (S.15a) within the Shona language group (S.10). According to Ngonyani (2002), there are three positions reserved for the negation marker in bantu languages presents two main negation mechanisms: Pre-initial, Post-initial, and Post-final. However, the Ndau languages presents two main negation mechanisms: Pre-initial and Post-initial, which will be analyzed based on the following criteria: (i) position of the negation in the sentence; (ii) frequency of each type of negation; (iii) grammatical structure of the negation; and (iv) variations between oral and written texts. Oral texts demonstrate greater flexibility and elliptical use, while written texts present more present more structural forms.
