Abstract

This study aims to investigate binominal quantifier constructions expressing large quantity in Brazilian Portuguese, specifically um monte de NP and um leque de NP, through the lens of Multimodal Construction Grammar. Drawing on the premise that communication is inherently multimodal (Müller et al., 2013), the analysis focuses on the interplay between verbal expression and gesture, particularly the gestural manifestation of the conceptual metaphors MORE IS UP (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980) and BREADTH IS LATERAL OPENING. The study describes the formal and semantic properties of these constructions and discusses their expressive potential, which is tied to processes of semantic expansion. Quali-quantitative results indicate that more transparent constructions motivate more iconic gestures, whereas more opaque constructions elicit more schematic gestures, revealing the gradient nature of verb–gesture integration. The work contributes both to the development of the emerging multimodal perspective within Construction Grammar and to a deeper understanding of large-quantity indefinite quantifiers in Brazilian Portuguese.
