Reconfiguração semântico-construcional do verbo entregar em usos do português: o caso dos papéis semânticos do sujeito

Abstract

This article presents the results of the analysis of the thematic roles of the subject in cases of variation with the verb to entregar, in which the verb extrapolates the current description as transitive or ditransitive, appearing in an intransitive pattern next to an intensifier, as in: “o iluminador [...] vai entregar bastante na minha maquiagem” (Youtube, 2025). In these occurrences, the usual meaning of verb transference is faded and a sense of quality or performative capacity of the referent is linked to the position of subject. To examine the phenomenon, the study is based on Usage-Based Functional Linguistics and is characterized as a synchronic research of a qualitative-quantitative nature (Lacerda, 2016; Paiva, 2019). The corpus of analysis consists of 200 oral samples taken from Youtube videos. In the analysis, it was observed that this use with the verb entregar is related to the association of the preacher with inanimate elements occupying thematic roles (Chafe, 1979; Cançado, 2008) typically human. This result seems to point to a cline of change linked to the abstraction and objectification of the element as a function of subject, according to Heine (2002). We argue that the use of non-typical expedients in the subject position has impacts on the syntactic-semantic versatility of clauses with this verb and probably on the constructional network.
