Abstract

This text introduces volume 3, issue 4 (Jan–Jun 2025) of Baraúnas, an online History journal edited at the State University of Feira de Santana (UEFS), whose editorial mission is the broad dissemination of historiographical knowledge, with particular emphasis on the history of the state of Bahia. The presentation situates the journal’s recent editorial trajectory by recalling previous thematic dossiers and by announcing a fourth dossier, “Economic and Social History of Sugarcane Brazil (16th–19th Centuries),” which signals a new phase marked by the beginning of an internationalization process. This shift is further underscored by the bilingual (Portuguese/English) presentation of the issue’s contents. The dossier comprises five articles that share a common purpose: to analyze the significance of the sugar economy in shaping economic, social, and family dynamics across different Brazilian regions, especially in the nineteenth century, drawing on diverse documentary corpora and methodological approaches. Beyond the dossier, the issue also features a book review on the historical trajectory of sugarcane in Brazil and its socio-environmental impacts, as well as five open-topic articles addressing, among other themes, labor and sociability in markets, slavery and gender, regional economic circulation, and cultural history. The presentation concludes by inviting readers to engage closely with the new issue and by highlighting its scholarly relevance within the journal’s expanding international horizon.
